The Grand Egyptian Museum (GEM) will launch a trial of the main galleries, with approximately twelve highlighted exhibition halls open to the public. This is a pre-opening exercise to reinforce further ongoing efforts to seamlessly manage the visitor experience as part of the preparations for the eagerly awaited official opening.
GEM's main galleries provide a fabulous overview of thousands of years, from prehistoric times, 50,000 BC, to the Roman period, around 400 AD.
Visitors see artefacts under three umbrellas of interrelated themes that show how these factors shaped the complex relationships between ancient Egyptian kings, their people and the gods.
The themes are kingship, society and beliefs. The works in the main galleries can be appreciated not only for their own great value, but as pieces of a larger story - the best view of all the richness of Egypt's past ever assembled. The visit can be made by walking through the rooms in order, or by choosing particular ideas to follow, or by mixing the two to create new paths of your own. It is an unparalleled opportunity to see Egyptian culture grow from its very simple beginnings to a highly organised and vibrant society.
In addition to the main shows, guests can visit the open-air sections of the museum, including the Children's Museum, the outdoor gardens and the commercial part of GEM, which includes restaurants, cafes and shops selling well-known Egyptian brands. Visitors to the museum are welcomed by the famous Hanging Obelisk, and within its halls, the Great Hall houses the giant statue of King Ramses II, the Victory Column of King Merneptah, and a statue of a Ptolemaic king and queen - all marvels that so powerfully illustrate the historical legacy Egypt holds for modern times. The Grand Staircase would add to the beauty of the museum with 59 gigantic artefacts including some beautiful royal statues, stelae, columns and sarcophagi. It is a dramatic experience that deepens as you climb the stairs to learn more about the heritage of ancient Egypt. It is important to note that access to the Tutankhamun galleries will be completely denied until the official opening of the museum.
This phase marks a further step forward for the GEM, following the triumphant soft unveiling of certain parts - which have included private tours and events - since November 2022.
The museum is seeking to enhance its services for the grand opening. For news on the trial opening of the main galleries and booking details, please see the relevant sources.
